asked the Secretary of State for Defence what percentage of Royal Navy and Royal Air Force pensioners who previously received their pensions weekly are now having them paid monthly in arrears by credit transfer into a bank, National Giro or building society account; and what proportion has opted to receive their pensions by weekly orders cashable at post offices.

During 1977–78, 47,552 RN and RAF pensioners who were receiving weekly payment of their Service pensions were asked whether, in the interests of economy, they would be prepared in future to accept payment monthly in arrears. A total of 72 per cent. agreed to do so, while 28 per cent preferred to continue receiving payment on a weekly basis.
