asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what study his Department has made of the Ratcliff Foldaway Tail-lift; if there is any guidance he can give to disabled patients, personnel in the caring professions and others using this lift; and if he will make a statement.

The Department has not made a detailed study of the Ratcliff Foldaway tail-lift which is a proprietary item in widespread commercial use.Following an isolated incident advice was issued to health authorities in agreement with the manufacturers about a modification to this equipment. I do not propose to issue similar advice to local authorities although the Department will, of course, respond to any inquiries received from them or others concerned with disabled people. I am satisfied that these arrangements are sufficient to deal with any problems which may arise.
