asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the complement of nursing staff in the National Health Service in Scotland; and what is the actual number employed.

It is not possible to give a theoretical nursing complement for the National Health Service in Scotland. At 30 September 1979, the number of nurses employed was 66,338; expressed as whole-time equivalents the number was 56,037.
