asked the Secretary of State for Wales what is his estimate of the total annual cost of education and training undertaken by his Department; and whether he is able to make an estimate of the cost of training carried out by the private sector in Wales.

The cost of training non-industrial Welsh Office staff for the year ended 31 July 1979 was about £0·21 million. This figure covers training given within the Department, at the Civil Service College and externally. It excludes the basic staff costs of the students and their related travelling and subsistence costs. I am unable to make any estimate of the cost of private sector training in Wales.
