asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many members of the British Armed Forces are on secondment to countries in the Middle East: and if he will list those countries, together with the number of British personnel serving in them.

On 31 December 1979 there were, in all, 311 British loan Service personnel present in the following Middle Eastern countries: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. It is not the practice to disclose numbers of personnel in individual countries: details of arrangements between Governments are confidential.
