asked the Secretary State for Education and Science how many applications were made by women in each year since 1975 for a dependance allowance to enable them to take up full-time education while their husbands looked after their children; and what percentage of these was granted.

In the academic year 1978–79 allowances were paid to some 4,500 men and 2,250 women students at a total cost of £4·7 million.
