asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many students are currently studying Welsh in universities and polytechnics.

In 1978–79, the last academic year for which information is available, there were 292 students studying Welsh and/or other Celtic languages as a single subject in the University of Wales and the Polytechnic of Wales. The great majority of these were studying Welsh alone. Information about the total number of students studying Welsh in combination with other subjects is not readily available.
