asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the number of general practitioners working within the National Health Service in 1970, 1978 and 1980 at the nearest convenient date.

On 1 January 1970, 1978 and 1980, there were, respectively, 20,223; 22,403 and 23,082* general medical practitioners, including unrestricted and restricted principals, assistants and trainees, working within the NHS in England.
