asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will provide an estimate of the proportion of births currently to mothers of United Kingdom birth but New Commonwealth ethnic origin.

No direct information is available. On the assumptions set out in an article in Population Trends 16 " Population of New Commonwealth and Pakistani ethnic origin: new projections ", some 1 per cent. of all births occurring in Great Britain in the period mid-1976 to mid-1981 would be births of wholly NCWP ethnic origin to mothers themselves born in Great Britain.
