asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the cost to his Department of providing secretariat and executive support services for each non-departmental public body to which he appoints members other than civil servants.

The latest available figures are contained in appendix A to part three of the "Report on Non-Departmental Public Bodies" (Cmnd. 7797), in column 5 of table A and in table B, a copy of which is available in the Library. These figures reflect the total staffing and other costs relating to the bodies concerned directly borne by my Department including, where applicable, the cost of fees and expenses for board members. Of the bodies listed, the Kennedy Memorial Trust is the only one to which I do not appoint members.
