asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what proportion of public expenditure on personal social services in England and Wales was devoted to the elderly in 1978–79 ; and how this compares with the three preceding years ;(2) what proportion of public expenditure on personal social services for the elderly was spent on residential care in 1978–79 ; and how this compares with the three preceding years.

The table below sets out, for the period 1975–76 to 1978–79, the proportions of net revenue expenditure on the personal social services going on services mainly for the elderly—residential/day care, home helps, meals-on-wheels, aids and adaptations—and the proportions of that expenditure going on residential care.
