Mr. John MacKay
asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many kilometres of wooden safety barriers have been removed from roads in Argyll since the current urgent programme of removals was instituted.
Mr. Rifkind
On trunk roads in Argyll, 27 kilometres of wooden safety barriers have been removed since the beginning of the year: 4ΒΌ kilometres of barriers remain on trunk roads at locations where some form of barrier is considered essential to safety: these will be replaced by steel barriers as soon as possible. The information on non-trunk roads will not be available until later this week and I shall write to my hon. Friend as soon as I have the figures.
