asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he is satisfied with the operation of the campaign to prevent rickets among the Asian community; how much has been spent on this; and what plans he has to provide more funds.

Yes, I am satisfied with the progress of the campaign to which funds of £70,000 have been allocated. £53,000 has already been spent and the eventual total cost is expected to be about £90,000.

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give further consideration to the introduction of free dietary supplements of vitamin D to be made available on demand to prevent rickets among the Asian community.

This must remain a decision for health authorities in the light of the local situation. They already have the power to make vitamin D supplements available free of charge.
