asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how much each area health authority wrote off in unpaid private patients' bills for the last financial year.

I regret that this information is not available centrally. However, it is estimated that the sums written off in unpaid private patients' bills in 1980–81 amounted to less than 1 per cent. of the health authorities' total income from private patients.
