asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is Her Majesty's Government's policy towards European Economic Community membership of an international sugar agreement.

The Government support the accession of the European Community to the international sugar agreement on satisfactory terms and, during the period of United Kingdom Presidency of the Council, have pressed for an early opening of negotiations. As a result, on 27 October the Council authorised the Commission to explore with the International Sugar Council ways and means of establishing co-operation in the general interests of world market stability, with a view to possible Community accession to an improved agreement.
