asked the Secretary of State for Defence what was the full cost to public funds of the Royal Navy officer recruitment press and advertising campaign in July and August.

Final production costs are not yet available, but the total bill for RN officer recruitment advertising in July and August is expected to be in the region of £150,000.

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many officers have been recruited into the Royal Navy during the period from the last defence review, published on 25 June, until the latest available date; and how many it is estimated will be recruited up to April 1982.

161 officers were recruited into the Royal Navy between 1 July 1981 and 31 October 1981. Details of officers recruited subsequently will be published in the normal way.

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what is the budget of the Royal Navy recruitment advertising campaign for the current year; and whether it will be overspent.

Estimates provision for recruitment advertising in 1981–82 was £1·6 million; final outturn is expected to be less than £1·0 million.
