asked the Secretary of State for Transport how much of the £160 million limit in section 1(3) of the Ports (Financial Assistance) Act 1981 has been spent; and if he will give details of how these funds have been expended.

About £104 million has now been paid out or committed. This is made up as follows:

* Cashflow deficit grants have only been paid since February 1981, and include essential capital expenditure.
