asked the Secretary of State for the Environment by how much average noise levels in urban areas have increased since 1978; and what forecast his Department has for such noise levels by 1990.

It is not feasible to express noise levels in urban areas as overall average figures or, hence, to give any forecasts for such levels in 1990. Noise arises from many sources, and the reduction of noise levels is being sought by action on many fronts.
