Housing Starts (West Midlands)

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many housing association starts are now under construction in the West Midlands; and what were the figures for 1978, 1979 and 1980.

According to the figures reported by local authorities in the West Midlands at the end of September 1981, an estimated 1,762 new dwellings were under construction for housing associations in the West Midlands region. Corresponding figures from the same source at the end of 1978, 1979, and 1980 were 4,355, 4,895 and 3,861, respectively.

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the latest number of local authority housing starts now under construction in Birmingham, Coventry, Sandwell, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Walsall and Stoke; and what is the percentage difference between the number of local authority housing starts in the region in 1978 and so far in 1981.

The numbers of dwellings under construction for the named local authorities at the end of September 1981, were:

During the first nine months of 1981 an estimated 1,192 dwellings were started for local authorities in the West Midlands region, which is 83 per cent. below the corresponding figure for 1978.
