asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what percentage of the total population is aged 65 years and over; what were the comparable figures five, 10, 15 and 20 years ago; and what assessment he has made of the likely percentage in five and 10 years' time.

The percentages are as follows. The figure for 1980 is the most recently available estimate.
