asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the estimated total cost of all higher education, including grants to students, in the United Kingdom in 1980–81; and to what extent this amount differs from the plans contained in the March 1980 public expenditure White Paper.

The figures for the areas for which my right hon. Friend is responsible are as follows:
