asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what information his Department has made publicly available regarding the latest date for claiming eligibility to earnings-related supplements to national insurance benefits. the number of dependants on supplementary benefits in 1970, 1974, 1979 and the latest available date for the Birkenhead area; and if he will classify this information according to whether the claimant was (i) unemployed, (ii) sick, (iii) one-parent family, (iv) retired or (v) other.

Information is not available in the form requested. However, the following table shows numbers of claimants receiving supplementary benefit from the two local DHSS offices in Birkenhead* which in the main cover the area of the former borough council.
