asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many people are on the waiting list for Northern Ireland Housing Executive houses in the East Belfast, South Belfast, North Belfast and West Belfast electoral areas.

This is a matter for the Northern Ireland Housing Executive but I have been informed by the chairman that first preference applications—excluding transfer requests from existing tenants—on the waiting list at 29 January 1982 were:

Number
East Belfast2,105
South Belfast1,917
North Belfast2,235
West Belfast4,316

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many new houses have been started in East Belfast, South Belfast, North Belfast and West Belfast; and what are the projections for the next three years.

Information on the number of private sector houses started is not available. Public sector starts are a matter for the Northern Ireland Housing Executive and the housing associations but I understand that the estimated number of new houses started during 1981–82 and projected for 1982–83 in Belfast is as follows:

1981–821982–83
East Belfast496473
South Belfast432179
North Belfast607506
West Belfast504394
The number of new starts in the two subsequent years is not available.
