asked the Secretary of State for Transport which representative of his Department will attend the experimental safety vehicle conference in Japan in November; and if he will make a statement.

The conference to which my hon. Friend refers is presumably the ninth international technical conference on experimental safety vehicles due to be held in Kyoto, Japan from 1 to 4 November 1982. My Department is taking an active part in preparation for this conference, as it has done in all previous ESV conferences and will be adequately represented. It is, however, too early to say who from the Department will attend.
