asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many community nurseries exist in England; and in which local authorities.

The statistics we collect from local authorities about day care show:

  • a. the number of day nurseries and day centres and the number of full time places they provide;
  • b. the number of registered child minders and the number of children they are permitted to take;
  • c. the number of premises providing sessional care and the number of places.
  • However, the various facilities for children under 5 to which the term "community nursery" could be applied are not separately identifed.
