asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he is satisfied with the share of the design work on trunk roads in Scotland which is undertaken by the private sector; and if he will make a statement.

We have always aimed to allocate work to consulting engineers to ensure a sound base for these firms in Scotland. Their share of the design and supervision work on trunk roads in Scotland will be increased over the next few years by additional schemes valued at more than £50 million.
