asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what consideration he is giving to providing financial assistance for the re-development of Manchester central station; and if he will make a statement.

Greater Manchester council has applied for £7 million grant under the urban programme towards the £14 million cost of converting the train hall at central station.

The Department is considering the financial implications of the proposal and my right hon. Friend will make a decision as soon as possible.
