asked the Secretary of State for Industry what is the average established cost per job created arising directly out of regional financial assistance for each year since 1970.

The information requested is not readily available and could be provided only at disproportionate cost. However, table 17 of the Industry Act annual report for the year ended 31 March 1982 gives the available information on assistance in relation to the creation and preservation of jobs.

asked the Secretary of State for Industry how many jobs were created by regional assistance in each year since 1970.

Selective financial assistance under section 7 of the industry Act has been made for projects which have so far created new jobs as follows:

Financial yearNew jobs created
*1972–79112,000
1979–8032,000
1980–8120,000
1981–8218,000
* Prior to April 1979 figures for individual years were not available.

asked the Secretary of State for Industry how many inquiries of an industrial or service nature relating to financial assistance or location were received in each of the regions of the United Kingdom during the last two months; and how this compares with a similar period in 1978.

I regret that the information requested is not readily available and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost; and no figures are in any case available for 1978.

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what value and proportion of United Kingdom total of grants from the European Economic Community regional funds in the years 1979–80 and 1981 have been received for each of the regions of the United Kingdom.

I shall reply to the hon. Member as soon as possible and place a copy in the Library.
