asked the Secretary of State for Industry what steps he has taken to identify substitutes for asbestos and encourage their development.

The Department of Industry has made the asbestos industry aware that it continues to be willing, under the terms of its various schemes, to respond positively to requests for support for projects involving substitution. It is already supporting a number of such projects but commercial confidentiality prevents disclosure of the details.
