asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what has been the total cost to date to public funds in payments to merchant banks and other institutions in respect of the selling of shares as part of the Government's programme of privatisation.

The amount payable by the Government for advice and professional services in connection with the sale of shares in Cable and Wireless, British Aerospace, National Freight Corporation and Amersham International was about £12 million excluding VAT and stamp duty.
