asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make representations to the South African Government to commute the death sentence passed in the case of Mrs. Maureen Smith and her two co-defendants.

The question of representations is premature. It would be contrary to international practice to make representations while the case is still sub judice, leave to appeal having been granted.
