asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will exempt children's allowance when calculating the income of recipients for social security benefit.

No. The supplementary benefit scale rates are intended to meet all the normal requirements of a family. It is right therefore, in view of the means-tested nature of the supplementary benefit scheme, that other benefits and allowances should normally be taken into account.
