asked the Minister for Trade what progress has been made as a result of the general agreement on tariffs and trade meeting towards action being taken against those of the United Kingdom's trading partners who do not allow free or equal access to United Kingdom exports.

The declaration of the GATT Ministerial meeting explicitly recognised distortions to trade which result from non-tariff measures and high tariff barriers. It was agreed to conduct a review of non-tariff measures to secure the elimination of those not compatible with GATT rules. The Government will continue to take all possible steps, including action through the EC and the GATT, to remove unfair barriers to our exports wherever they may be found.
