asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what the population of Accrington was (a) 10 years ago, (b) five years ago and (c) at the latest available date.

The Registrar General's annual population estimates for Accrington MB ceased after 1973 with the reorganisation of local government and the inclusion of Accrington in the district of Hyndburn. However the results of the 1981 census have been aggregated to provide a 1981 figure. The relevant available information is:
