asked the Secretary of State for Transport if his Department will issue advice to rural county councils on methods of avoiding damage in villages from lorries routed through them; and if he will make a statement.

Department of Transport circular 2/82 advised county councils how to make the most effective use of their wide powers to ban heavy lorries from unsuitable roads. Where a complete ban is not practicable, various measures may be taken, such as imposing speed limits and erecting guard rails.
