asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will estimate the cost to the Exchequer of abolishing the married man's allowance in favour of transferable tax allowances.

The effect in yield would depend on the level of allowances and the degree of transferability. A discussion of the issues involved is contained in the Green Paper on the taxation of husband and wife—Cmnd. 8093.
