asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will install crash barriers to protect against crossover crashes on the new Al2 Chelmsford bypass.

I refer my right hon. Friend to the answer I gave to him on 28 November 1984, at columns 478–79. Our review of the case for crash barriers on the bypass is nearing completion and I hope to make an announcement in the near future.

Lighting will be provided at the five interchanges on the new Al2 Chelmsford bypass and I am investigating whether further lighting is justified.
