The Government continue to attach importance to the safe and economic development of nuclear power.

My right hon. Friend regularly meets the chairman of the Central Electricity Generating Board to discuss matters of common interest.

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will direct the Central Electricity Generating Board that nuclear power stations should be operated economically so as to minimise subsidies from the taxpayers.

The CEGB's nuclear power stations produce the cheapest electricity available to the grid. The question of subsidies does not arise.
