asked the Secretary of State for Defence what are, and if he is satisfied with, the proportions of the costs of his Department relating to tri-service and individual service advertising and recruiting.

Recruiting costs, including advertising, are financed on a single service basis. However expenditure on service recruiting for the financial year 1983–84 totalled £44·6 million at outturn prices. Advertising and publicity costs made up some £9 million of this total, or about 20 per cent. of the recruiting budget. Estimated total expenditure on recruiting for financial year 1984–85 at outturn prices is £48·5 million, of which about £12·6 million was spent on advertising and publicity or 26 per cent. of the recruiting budget.
