asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will estimate the approximate net effect on public expenditure of all those retired officers of the rank of colonel and equivalent being given retired pay at the single consolidated rate of £12,152 per annum, less income tax at 30 per cent. on the amount of any overall increase, rather than at the various different rates derived from the different dates of retirement.
The current additional cost would be of the order of £4·25 million a year.
asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many officers currently in receipt of service pensions retired with the rank of colonel or equivalent during the periods (a) 1 January 1975 to 31 March 1976 and (b) 1 January 1977 to 31 December 1977.
Information is not available for the periods in question. However, the numbers of male and female officers of the rank of colonel or equivalent who retired in the periods for which information is available are:
|Period||Number of officers|
|1 April 1974 to 31 March 1975||95|
|1 April 1975 to 31 March 1976||159|
|1 April 1976 to 31 March 1977||128|
|1 April 1977 to 31 March 1978||113|
