asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what information he has as to the present alleged incidence of the use by police of excessive violence.

In 1984 the investigation of 3,278 complaints against police officers alleging assault was completed; 112 complaints were substantiated. In the same year 12 police officers were convicted in the criminal courts of offences of violence and four were sentenced to terms of imprisonment.
