asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what was the cost in 1984 and what is the expected cost in 1985 (a) in the United Kingdom and (b) in the European Community of storing beef (i) in public intervention and (ii) in assisted private storage; and what are the corresponding figures for transporting beef to store.

Expenditure by the guarantee section of the European agricultural guidance and guarantee fund in 1984 on public intervention storage and assisted private storage for beef was 800·4 mecu and 14·1 mecu respectively, of which 58·9 mecu and 0·4 mecu was in the United Kingdom. The draft budget for 1985 provides for expenditure of 943 mecu on public intervention storage and 136 mecu on assisted private storage for beef. Based on our share of expenditure forecast to the end of June, expenditure in the United Kingdom would be 83 mecu and 4 mecu respectively. Transport costs are included in the figures for public intervention storage but are not separately identifiable.
