asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what progress he is making with measures to ensure the maintenance of (a) central computer services, (b) technical services and (c) scientific services currently provided by the metropolitan counties and the Greater London council; and if he will make a statement.

The future of these services is a matter for the successor authorities but my right hon. Friend the Minister for Local Government has offered the Department's good offices in considering how worthwhile work could be maintained.
