asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what advice is given by his Department and the Nature Conservancy Council regarding the application of organochlorine pesticides to timber in roof spaces and other enclosed situations.

The Department of the Environment participates in the pesticides safety precautions scheme under which organochlorine pesticides used in timber treatment are evaluated and cleared for safety in use. Advice on the application of pesticides cleared under the scheme is issued by the Health and Safety Executive, and recommended precautionary measures are included on the label of products offered for sale.
