asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations have been made by Her Majesty's Government to the European Commission concerning the status of the Scottish Highlands and Islands in future assessments of the social and economic situation and development of various regions of the European Community.

I have been asked to reply.Following consideration of the regional analysis contained in the European Commission's second periodic report, published in March 1984, we have secured the Commission's agreement that the Highlands and Islands will be treated as a separate level II region in any future analysis of the social and economic development of the regions of the Community.
