asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will include the question of financial support by his Department for private residential and care homes for the elderly in his eventual plans for rationalisation of the welfare state.

The Green Paper "Reform of Social Security" contains no proposals for changes to the system of financial support to residents in private residential care homes for the elderly. We shall, however, keep this aspect under consideration in the light of our monitoring of the new board and lodging regulations which came into effect in April and the outcome of the consultations on the Green Paper.
