asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will make a statement about the teachers' pay dispute.

On 23 May the management panel of the Burnham primary and secondary committee increased its 1985 pay offer to 5 per cent. The teachers' panel rejected this and again refused to go to arbitration. I set out the Government's position in my letter of 21 May to the education chairmen of the local authority associations. A copy of this letter has been placed in the Library.
