asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many educational advisers were employed by local education authorities in England and Wales in the years 1954, 1964, 1974 and 1984; and what was the cost of their employment in each of these years.

Information on numbers of advisors is not available centrally for 1954, 1964 or 1974. There were about 1,900 local education authority inspectors and advisers in post in England at the end of 1984. The cost of advisers is not separately identifiable in figures available centrally. Information about local education authority advisers in Wales is the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales.
