asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many teachers were employed by local education authorities in England and Wales in the years 1954, 1964, 1974 and 1984; and what was the cost of their employment in each of these years.

The information that is readily available is given in the following table. The figures relate to maintained nursery, primary and secondary schools.
