asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give the total number of outpatient attendances in National Health Service hospitals in 1983; and what was the comparable figure for 1978.

In 1983 the total number of outpatient attendances in National Health Service hospitals in England was 36,519,550. The corresponding figure for 1978 was 33,950,339. This represents an increase of 2,569,211, or 7ยท6 per cent. over the period.
